How to turn this modern but simple apartment into a prettier one?

I am renting this apartment and move in soon. I'm not allowed make major changes i.e paint walls, change furniture, but am allowed to do little touches. I love the kitchen but the lounge and bedroom are drab especially the lounge; although the flat is brand new so in excellent condition. I would like the flat to have a girlie feel but also want it to have a warm feeling. What little things would you suggest I do. I shall have to put a rug in the lounge but dnt know which kind.
